Switches and packet technologies have allowed businesses to enjoy the speed and reliability of OC768 lines, originally intended for use solely by the carriers. Many businesses in Rhode Island choose to locate, or relocate their business, in a building with an existing OC768 line installed (see Lit Building). By sharing the OC768 line with other businesses in the building, access costs can drop dramatically, but may be offset by higher property rental costs.
